Restoring History and Creating Memories in Bailey, Colorado

Nestled along the North Fork of the South Platte River in Bailey, on one of the most gorgeous mountain properties, the historic Glen Isle Resort stands as a testament to the dedication and love of its current owners, Mary Ruth and Greg Vincent. Their journey from guests to owners and restorers of this cherished landmark is nothing short of remarkable.

A Personal Connection

Mary Ruth’s connection to Glen Isle dates back to her childhood in the 1970s, when her family visited the resort every summer. These trips were filled with chuckwagon dinners, square dances, horseback riding, and campfire sing-a-longs—experiences that created lifelong memories. When she met Greg in 2000, she introduced him to Glen Isle, and despite the resort’s dilapidated state, they both saw its potential.

The Purchase and Restoration

In 2016, during a visit to Bailey following an Adele concert, Mary Ruth and Greg discovered Glen Isle in shambles, with a real estate sign marking its uncertain future. Determined to it save from further decline, they made what Greg said was a ridiculous offer to purchase the property. Despite numerous obstacles, including the myriad of challenges in even getting it financed in its dilapidated condition and incredibly complex restoration work, they remained committed. By 2018, they began welcoming guests back, starting with one cabin and gradually expanding as renovations progressed.

Historic Preservation

Built in 1901, Glen Isle is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, which presents unique challenges in terms of what can and cannot be altered. The Vincents have worked diligently within these constraints to ensure that the resort retains its historic charm while providing modern comforts. Their efforts include restoring 16 of the 19 cabins and undertaking significant infrastructure improvements, such as installing a comprehensive water treatment system.

A Labor of Love

Restoring Glen Isle has been a true labor of love for Mary Ruth and Greg. They have lived in multiple cabins and even an RV during the renovation process, often doing much of the work themselves. And sacrificing many creature comforts we all take for granted. But, despite the numerous sacrifices and hardships, their passion for preserving Glen Isle's legacy and creating a welcoming retreat for guests has never wavered.

Events and Amenities

Glen Isle Resort is not just a place to stay; it's a destination for creating memories. The resort’s beautiful grounds and historic structures make it an ideal venue for family reunions, weddings and other special events. Whether it’s a ceremony by the river or a reception in the rustic main lodge, Glen Isle offers a picturesque setting for your special day.
For those looking to reconnect with nature, Glen Isle provides ample camping opportunities across its 100-acre property. Guests can enjoy the natural beauty of the area while sleeping under the stars. The resort also features unique and historically significant cottages, each accommodating between two and ten guests, offering a blend of rustic charm and modern comforts.

Community and Family

Glen Isle continues to be a beloved destination for many families, some of whom have been visiting for generations. The resort’s activities, including fishing, hiking, and social events, create a sense of community and nostalgia. The Vincents have also introduced new attractions, such as a coffee shop (now open in the Kiva during hours when other coffee shops are closed) and Tuesday night concerts, enhancing the guest experience while staying true to the resort’s roots.

Challenges and Future Plans

While Glen Isle thrives in the summer, winter poses significant challenges due to lower tourist traffic and high heating costs. The Vincents are exploring creative solutions to maintain year-round operations and continue their restoration efforts. Their dedication to providing an exceptional experience for guests remains unwavering, as they balance preserving history with the demands of modern hospitality.

A Place of Memories

Mary Ruth and Greg Vincent’s story is a testament to the power of dedication, love, and community. Through their hard work, Glen Isle Resort stands not only as a piece of history but as a place where new memories are made, and old traditions are cherished. Whether it’s a family reunion, a wedding, or a peaceful retreat, Glen Isle continues to be a magical destination in the heart of Bailey, Colorado.
We are proud to spotlight Mary Ruth and Greg Vincent as esteemed members of the Platte Canyon Area Chamber of Commerce, and we celebrate their incredible contribution to our community and the preservation of our local heritage.
