Platte Canyon Fire Protection District – Ben Mulligan

Awarded the NDME State Grant twice , most recently for 2027-2028. Each grant equals approximately $850 K.
Year-round wildland deployment supports operations; has enabled the District to bill more than $5 M over time.
Response calls have increased fivefold in the last five years; this year alone at ~1,400 calls.
New equipment: a pump truck with enhanced capacity, a new ambulance, and a Type 3 engine.
Construction at Crow Hill Firehouse nearing completion: adds three equipment bays, allows living quarters expansion.
Awaiting a staffing grant to add one person per shift , which will improve response times for our community.

Meet C hill Squirrel Trading Company Owners: Jeff Shippen & Kim Mickelsen Shippen

Known for its variety, charm, and ever-changing shelves, Chill Squirrel is more than a store—it’s an experience. This “practical gift shop” has become a staple for both visitors and locals over the past six years.

Jeff and Kim Shippen each spent 37 years in corporate America—Jeff in data and Kim in marketing. Like many who fall in love with Bailey, they began as weekenders after buying a vacation home here in 2015. The peace of the mountains called them to make Bailey their full-time home, and by early 2019 they had opened the first Chill Squirrel shop above the old Coffee Shack on Hwy 285.

In 2021, they moved into their current location in Rustic Square—a bigger, brighter space that gave them room to expand and to join a cluster of other local shops. The move has allowed them to thrive, grow, and better serve the Bailey community.

Gifts, Surprises, and Something for Everyone

Chill Squirrel is more than a gift shop—it’s a place where tourists and locals alike can find something unique, practical, and fun. The shelves are filled with a wide variety of treasures—candles, cigars, jewelry, toys for kids, and gourmet food items like charcuterie boards. They also carry unique imported goods from Turkey, India, and Ghana.

What makes them stand out is not just the variety but the philosophy behind the shop: it’s designed to be a place where you can pick up a gift for any occasion—birthday, wedding, anniversary—and have it be something special you wouldn’t expect to find in a small town.

Jeff and Kim are also constantly refreshing their merchandise, learning what appeals most to their customers, and never letting their inventory go stale. Each visit feels new, which is part of the reason customers keep coming back.

From Rocky the Squirrel to a Community Symbol

The name has a heartfelt backstory. Shortly after Jeff and Kim were married, Jeff found a baby squirrel—pink, furless, and abandoned. They named him Rocky and raised him until he was ready to return to the wild. From that moment, squirrels became a symbol for them.

Pair that with the sense of calm they felt every time they turned off the highway onto 285 and left the stress of city life behind, and the name “Chill Squirrel” was born. It’s playful, memorable, and a little mysterious—so much so that people often stop in just to learn what it means.

Thriving Through Challenges and Change

Opening right before COVID in 2019 tested their resilience, but Chill Squirrel pulled through and celebrated six successful years in March 2025.

One of their biggest ongoing challenges has been letting locals know they’re here. Even now, people who have lived just down the road for years are discovering Chill Squirrel for the first time. Despite that, their reputation continues to grow, fueled by loyal regulars, repeat visitors from Denver, Evergreen, Conifer, and beyond, and seasonal residents who make the shop one of their first stops when they return to town.

Jeff and Kim are most proud of their ability to adapt, evolve, and stay strong despite economic ups and downs.

Family, Community, and the Joy of Connection

Chill Squirrel is about more than selling gifts—it’s about people. Jeff and Kim love connecting with tourists from all over the world, as well as building relationships with their Bailey neighbors.

Outside of the shop, they enjoy traveling, exploring Colorado’s mountains and hidden gems, and—most importantly—spending time with their grandchildren: twin 6-year-old grandsons in Denver and a 1-year-old grandson in Omaha.

Advice for New Business Owners

“You cannot build it and think they will come,” Kim says. “You have to market yourself, get involved in the community, and create a compelling reason for people to visit you.”

Fun Fact

Squirrel lovers are drawn in by the name. Squirrel haters? They come in too—out of curiosity. Either way, the name works, and everyone leaves with a smile (and usually a bag in hand).

McGraw Park - A Ge m Along the River

Tucked along a beautiful stretch of the North Fork of the South Platte River, McGraw Park is one of Bailey’s true hidden gems. Managed entirely by the Park County Historical Society and its volunteers, the park is more than a picnic stop—it’s a place where history, recreation, and community come together.

I sat down with Jim Glenn, board member of the Historical Society, to learn more about McGraw Park’s past, present, and future. Jim’s background is as varied as the park itself: a 23-year Air Force veteran, a lifelong lover of trees and botany, and a longtime local realtor. His passion for Bailey’s history shines through in every story he shares.

A Park Rooted in Bailey’s Pioneer Past

McGraw Park sits on one of Bailey’s earliest homestead sites, dating back to the 1860s. Settlers built cabins here along the river, drawn by fertile land and the nearby mining boom. The park preserves Bailey’s oldest surviving cabin, (the Entriken Cabin) built in 1864, as well as a Railroad Waystation, a one-room schoolhouse, and even a Denver South Park & Pacific Railroad caboose.

These landmarks tell the story of Bailey’s early role as both a railroad stop and a stagecoach hub. Before the highways, this was where travelers rested, freight was unloaded, and supplies moved in and out of mining towns further west. When the railroad arrived in 1878, Bailey became a key stopover, connecting the high country to Denver and beyond.

The Park County Historical Society officially established McGraw Park in 1969, saving these buildings from being lost to time. Volunteers and donations turned scattered remnants of Bailey’s past into a living-history park that locals and visitors can enjoy today.

Each building in the park has a story to tell, and thanks to volunteers like Jim, visitors can explore these stories through tours, interpretive signs, and even frequently asked question booklets created for curious guests.

Mission & Purpose of PCHS

McGraw Park is just one way the Park County Historical Society carries out its broader mission across the county.

Their Mission: 
The Park County Historical Society (PCHS) is a preservation organization promoting the history and prehistory of the County through awareness and education for the citizens of Park County. The organization is dedicated to preservation, collection, and stewardship through cooperation and communication.

Their Purpose:

To educate the public on Park County's history

To discover, mark, and preserve buildings and sites of historic or prehistoric significance

To collect, preserve, and display items used by historic and prehistoric cultures prior to 1940

McGraw Park perfectly reflects this mission—bringing history to life while creating a welcoming place for learning and community connection.

More Than Just History

While history is the heart of McGraw Park, recreation plays an important role too. Visitors often stop to picnic, walk the riverside trails, or use the park as a launch point for kayaking. Families enjoy treasure hunts that tie into local lore, like the legend of the Reynolds Gang’s buried treasure.

The park also serves as a gathering place for community events, from Bailey Day celebrations to the new Quick Draw McGraw 2-Mile Race and Fall Fest this October 25. Check-in for race starts at 8:30am with Race at 10am. Fall Fest is at 4pm.

Powered by Volunteers

One of the most remarkable things about McGraw Park is that it runs entirely on volunteers—there is no paid staff. From gardening to guiding tours, from building trails to repairing 160-year-old cabins, cataloging hundred-year-old artifacts, everything is maintained by community members.

“We probably have 30 volunteers,” Jim shared. “Some tend the gardens, some act as docents, and some maintain 160 buildings. We could use help moving big boulders to the entry sign if someone could help us out. Every contribution matters.”

The gardens, now adopted by families and local businesses, are particularly stunning. As Jim puts it: “People come here for history, but why not have a beautiful place to enjoy while they’re learning?”

Ways to Get Involved

The Historical Society is always looking for people who want to lend a hand—or even just a curious mind. Opportunities include:

Volunteering: as a docent, gardener, or project helper
Researching: they have several historic items that need identifying
Donating or becoming a member (as little as $15/year for seniors, $20 for individuals, or $35 for family memberships)

A Community Treasure

Whether you’re standing inside Bailey’s oldest cabin, imagining the clatter of stagecoaches arriving, or climbing aboard a 20th-century railroad caboose, McGraw Park connects today’s visitors with the rich heritage of our town.

Jim sums it up best: “We want people to come, enjoy the park, learn some history—and then spend time in Bailey. Eat here, shop here, explore here. That’s how we keep the community thriving.”

Across the Platte Canyon region, more families than ever are struggling to keep food on the table. Rising prices, increased demand, and reductions in SNAP benefits have created a growing gap between what families need and what they can afford. For many local households, groceries have become one of the toughest monthly expenses to manage.

That’s why organizations like LifeBridge Food Pantry are so vital to our community. Every week, LifeBridge helps more than 120 Bailey-area families access fresh, nutritious food—along with kindness, dignity, and support. Their work has become a lifeline for neighbors of all ages, from young families to seniors on fixed incomes and that’s why they are our spotlight member of the month.

LifeBridge Food Pantry & Founders John and Lindy Obrecht

For more than a decade, LifeBridge Food Pantry has quietly and powerfully changed lives across Bailey and the Platte Canyon area. But to understand how this essential resource came to be, you have to start with the hearts behind it: longtime Bailey residents John and Lindy Obrecht.

After serving 38 years at Camp IdRaHaJe, John retired—and quickly discovered that retirement wasn’t for him. When a previous food pantry in the area closed, John felt called to do something. Helping others has always been part of his nature—he used to take leftover camp food to families who were struggling—so opening a local food pantry felt like a natural extension of their lives. In 2012, LifeBridge Food Pantry began, first rotating between homes, then operating from their garage for more than two years. Eventually, Crow Hill Bible Church provided space—until LifeBridge outgrew it as well.

Today, LifeBridge operates from the Bailey Business Center, which John and Lindy remodeled into a welcoming and efficient space. The pantry became such a vital community resource that generous supporters stepped in to help purchase the building two years ago. That permanent home has allowed LifeBridge to expand food storage, welcome more families, and continue growing to meet rising needs.

Every Friday and Saturday, between 120 and 130 local families walk through the doors to select foods they can take home and prepare. LifeBridge does not prepare meals—the mission is to help families feed themselves with dignity and choice. And with prices rising and SNAP benefits fluctuating, the need continues to grow.

LifeBridge relies on 30–40 volunteers who help run the pantry, manage the clothing closet, assist with firewood distribution, pick up donations, and stock shelves. There is no paid staff—John raises his own support like a missionary, so donations go directly to serving families. Their work is powered entirely by generosity, community, and faith.

How They Stretch Every Dollar

While donations of food and toiletries are always welcome, monetary donations often have the greatest impact. John keeps a sharp eye on every sale at King Soopers, Safeway, and Walmart—buying essentials by the case when prices drop. Milk, eggs, cereal, peanut butter, jelly, spaghetti, sauce, and produce are always in high demand. LifeBridge also partners with Food Bank of the Rockies and receives shipments through The Emergency Food Assistance Program (TEFAP), providing staple items like canned goods, fruit, vegetables, and pantry basics.

Holiday Support for Local Families

This time of year is especially important—and LifeBridge works hard to ensure local families can enjoy special holiday meals they might otherwise go without.

For Thanksgiving, LifeBridge is assembling full holiday meal baskets. Each complete basket costs $60, and LifeBridge is asking for help in one of two ways: 

✅ Donate $60 to sponsor an entire basket, or 

✅ Donate a frozen turkey or other items from the list below
Thanksgiving donations are needed by November 22nd.

For Christmas, LifeBridge hopes to give $50 grocery gift cards to each family they serve. Gift cards can be donated from any major grocery chain such as King Soopers, Safeway, Walmart, or Target. You may also donate cash, and LifeBridge will purchase the gift cards.

Christmas gift cards or donations are needed by December 18th, as they will be distributed on December 19th and 20th.

More Than Food

LifeBridge also offers: 

a free clothing closet 
emergency firewood (when available) 
a safe, friendly, judgment-free environment

Families from Bailey, Harris Park, Pine Junction, Fairplay, Jefferson, Lake George, and even Conifer come for support. There are no qualifications or proof required—if someone needs food, LifeBridge is there.

A Legacy of Service

John and Lindy have lived in Bailey for 52 years. They raised their family here, served the community through IdRaHaJe, and built LifeBridge from the ground up. Their deep faith fuels everything they do, along with an unshakable love for the people of this community.

“We love Bailey-ites,” they said. “The people we serve are outstanding people who just need help. It’s an honor to be here for them.”

Meet Owners: Kyleigh Rossignol & Ben Goldsmith

Tucked in Rustic Square in downtown Bailey, there’s a coffeehouse with a vibe that’s as unique and authentic as its origin story. Off the Rails – A Craft Coffeehouse isn’t just a place to grab your morning coffee — it’s a thoughtfully crafted “third place” for the Bailey community. The idea? To create a space that’s not home, not work — but a place where people can just be.

How It All Began

Kyleigh Rossignol, who grew up mostly in North Carolina, and Ben Goldsmith, originally from Naples, Florida, first met working at a Starbucks during the early days of the pandemic. Kyleigh had moved to Colorado for another job that fell through due to COVID, and Starbucks was one of the only places hiring at the time. The same went for Ben, who had just graduated from CU Boulder.
Kyleigh, once a hopeful future Starbucks franchisee, discovered during COVID that the coffee giant’s “third place” philosophy — the idea of being a welcoming community hub — didn’t hold up when the going got tough. That realization was the turning point: she didn’t just want to work in coffee. She wanted to build a place where people truly felt like they belonged.
And then came the joke comment that changed everything. In a casual conversation, Kyleigh jokingly told Ben’s dad, John Goldsmith, that if he bought the quirky old rock shop building in downtown Bailey that was up for sale, she could turn it into a coffeehouse.
He bought it the next day.
Suddenly, a dream Kyleigh thought wouldn’t come true until she was 50 became reality at age 23. With John’s support and Ben by her side, the couple spent the next 15 months gutting and transforming the space. It had no plumbing. No AC. No basic infrastructure. But vision, grit, and a lot of hard work turned it into a magical, welcoming space.

From Rock Shop to Cozy Coffeehouse

The remodel wasn’t quick or easy — especially during COVID. Delays in permitting, material shortages, and renovation challenges slowed them down. But Kyleigh took every opportunity to win over Park County's building department — even delivering cookies with her paperwork — and that persistence paid off.
The result? A cozy, welcoming space designed entirely by Kyleigh and Ben. Every piece of furniture, every paint color, and even the numerous wall outlets were selected with intention. Whether you're grabbing a cup to go or working remotely for hours, Off the Rails is a place to settle in, feel comfortable, and be part of something.

So... Why “Off the Rails”?

Many customers assume the name comes from the vintage photo of a derailed train that hangs inside the shop. That’s not untrue — but the real story is better.
When it came time to name their new business, Kyleigh and Ben got into their first-ever relationship argument over what to call it. Both wanted to name it after historic trains that ran through Bailey — but couldn’t agree on which. Kyleigh vented to her aunt, who declared, “You’re both crazy — you’re off the rails!” And that was it. A name — and a legacy — was born.

Despite facing burnout and the challenges of running a small business in a mountain town, the duo is still expanding. They’ve trained up new team members, doubled their business year over year, and are dreaming of being open seven days a week — if they can find the right help.
“The best advice I can give anyone thinking about opening a business,” says Kyleigh, “is get used to being scared. That feeling never really goes away — but don’t let it stop you. Just go for it.”

And Last, But Not Least…Before the Beans, There Was a Broadcast: The Story Behind the Story

Ben’s father, John Goldsmith, played a pivotal role in helping Off the Rails become a reality — purchasing the building that would become the heart of this community coffeehouse. But John’s own story is remarkable.
A celebrated broadcast journalist, John launched his career in Washington, DC in the 1960s and spent decades in nearly every role imaginable — from White House Correspondent to Managing Editor and Host of “Capital Edition”. He is especially known for his Emmy-winning coverage of the Air Florida crash into the Potomac River, which earned him international recognition.
As the longtime host of "Capital Edition" and a revered writer at WUSA-TV and WTTG-TV, John produced award-winning documentaries from China to the American rails, earning both Emmys and a George Foster Peabody Award.
Today, John brings his eye for storytelling and his belief that everyone has a story worth telling to Bailey — and his encouragement and support helped launch Off the Rails. He may not be behind the espresso machine, but his influence is infused in every cup.

Where Every Purchase Pays It Forward: PCCP Resale Boutique Turns 9

Nestled in the heart of downtown Bailey, the Platte Canyon Community Partnership Resale Boutique—affectionately known as the PCCP Resale Boutique—is far more than a charming thrift store. It’s a 100% volunteer-run, community-powered nonprofit that has donated more than $250,000 to local non-profit causes between Shawnee and Conifer since opening its doors in 2016. From scholarships and shelter support to community events and infrastructure fixes, this boutique is quietly changing lives—one transaction at a time.

Born Around a Kitchen Table

When a beloved local thrift shop unexpectedly closed, determined community members—including longtime volunteer and now-board president Donna Peters—refused to let that vital resource vanish. They asked themselves a bold question: “What would the perfect nonprofit look like if we had no rules?”
From that seed of imagination, the Boutique was born—named to reflect its mission (Platte Canyon), its values (Community Partnership), and its elevated thrift shopping experience (Resale Boutique). Their purpose: to support a wide range of local nonprofits through true partnerships, built on shared effort, commitment, and mutual support.

Give-and-Give: A Model that Works

The Boutique doesn’t just write checks—it builds relationships. Organizations that receive funding also give back, often logging 40 to hundreds of volunteer hours each month. Recipients are encouraged to promote their partnership with the Boutique and bring in shoppers. This “give-and-give” model means everyone has skin in the game—and the results are transformative.
In its early days, PCCP gave modest donations—$200 here and there to groups like PeaceWorks or the Boys & Girls Club. But as the store grew, so did its impact. Today, the Boutique awards $3,000 to $4,000 in grants each month through a formal process modeled after the Colorado Common Grant format, requiring applicants now submit detailed proposals, outlining how funds will be used—including line-item budgets and projected community benefit. Projects must deliver direct service to the Bailey/285 corridor community, whether through education, health, psychological services, or meaningful events. Infrastructure projects (like roof repairs) are considered, but only if they directly support community use.
Whether it’s funding mental health services, youth programs, scholarships, or even emergency repairs at a historic building in Shawnee, every grant aims to deliver tangible, community-centered outcomes.

Structured Like a Business, Powered by Heart - 100% Volunteer Driven

Despite its laid-back, welcoming vibe, the PCCP Resale Boutique is run with impressive professionalism. The all-volunteer board includes a President, Vice President, Treasurer, Secretary/Scholarship Coordinator, Volunteer Coordinator, and Social Media & Events Lead—each with clearly defined roles and responsibilities. An external accountant helps with annual filings to ensure transparency and financial integrity.
New volunteers are trained thoroughly, starting in the back learning sorting and pricing, supported by procedure manuals and standardized guidelines. Managers are promoted from within, and volunteers are empowered to take ownership of the shop—decorating, arranging displays, and connecting with shoppers—though pricing remains consistent to ensure fairness.
Since its founding, no one has ever drawn a salary—the only paid role is an external accountant who helps with annual filings. That means every dollar raised goes directly back into the community.
As Judi, one of the volunteer manager says, one of the best parts of volunteering is simply staying connected: “I’m proud that I can give back to the community. And socializing—most of us are retired, and it keeps us engaged. We meet so many people this way.”

The Boutique’s Secret Sauce: Flexibility & Trust

One of the keys to PCCP’s long-term success is its flexible scheduling philosophy. Volunteers aren’t locked into rigid shifts—they give time when and how it works for them. As a result, burnout is low and retention is high. Many volunteers far exceed the suggested six hours per month simply because they love being part of it.
From a humble start—two dress racks, a yellow piano, and a $5,000 loan from a quiet angel investor—to a bustling shop offering everything from $5 treasures to $400 luxury finds, PCCP Resale Boutique has become a favorite destination for locals and visitors alike. Need hiking boots? A wedding-guest dress in a pinch? A vintage coffee table? Chances are you’ll find it here—and at a great price.

Mentoring, Modeling, and Multiplying the Mission

Beyond their own walls, the PCCP team mentors other nonprofit boutiques, such as the Community Nest in Conifer. They freely share pricing strategies, insurance tips, and nonprofit wisdom—because they don’t see others as competition. “We’re all serving the same community,” they say.
And if a grant application is declined? Applicants still often receive a “good faith” donation and feedback for the future. Because at the end of the day, the Boutique’s mission is bigger than any one organization—it’s about community empowerment.

The Platte Canyon Area Chamber of Commerce is proud to announce the opening of the new Bailey Visitors Center, located at 81 Main Street, in the heart of downtown Bailey.

The Visitors Center, made possible through a partnership with Park County, which provided the space, was brought to life in just a matter of weeks—and with a budget of under $500.

"This was truly a community-powered project," said Mark Linne, President of the Platte Canyon Chamber. “Thanks to generous donations of furniture, fixtures, and time, and a lot of elbow grease from our Chamber Board, we were able to get this vital resource up and running with almost no cost.”

The center is designed to serve both visitors and locals, providing maps, business directories, recreational guides, brochures, and other information to help people make the most of their time in Bailey and the surrounding area. The space also highlights local attractions, shops, eateries, events, and outdoor activities.

As part of a broader effort to improve the visitor experience in Bailey, the Chamber is also working to add a video monitor and outdoor kiosks that will provide information 24/7 and is exploring additional ways to make Main Street more welcoming and accessible. In the meantime, public port-a-potties have been placed near the Visitors Center, addressing the long-standing challenge of having no public restrooms on Main Street.

The Chamber envisions the Visitors Center as a hub to boo st tourism, support local businesses, and help travelers see Bailey not just as a drive-through town—but as a true destination.

Bailey Visitor Center – Now Officially Open

It’s official: The Chamber has received the keys to the new Bailey Visitor Center from Commissioner Amy Mitchell. The center, located in downtown Bailey, includes restrooms, picnic tables, trash service, and visitor signage.

Special thanks to Shirley Septic for donating and maintaining two portable restrooms. The Chamber is currently seeking volunteers to help staff the center. Contact the Chamber if you’re interested.

Carol Togie, Director of the Park County Health Agency, shared insights about the scope of services the agency provides, including:

Infectious disease control (e.g., tuberculosis, typhoid, cholera)
Motor vehicle safety initiatives

Vaccinations for uninsured children

It’s important to note that the agency is not responsible for restaurant health inspections.

STRIDE Community Health Center – Open Tuesdays

The STRIDE Health Bus is available every Tuesday from 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM at the Bailey Library. If the mobile unit ("Billy the Bus") is not parked outside, services are offered inside the Library’s Community Room.

Services include:

Sick visits and chronic care (e.g., diabetes, hypertension)
Labs, wound care, and referrals
On-site staff and MedPod technology for virtual visits
Paperwork assistance and outreach support

Member Spotlight: Jim & Daphne Myers – The Sasquatch Outpost

If you've ever wandered down Bailey's Main Street and spotted the larger-than-life Sasquatch cutout out front—or maybe a footprint trail leading into the woods—you’ve likely discovered one of the most unique and talked-about businesses in all of Colorado: The Sasquatch Outpost.
Owned and operated by Jim and Daphne Myers, the Outpost isn’t just a fun gift shop with Bigfoot flair—it’s a full-on destination that attracts thousands of visitors each year. In fact, just since opening their Bigfoot-themed museum in 2016, they have welcomed over 100,000 guests from around the world. That’s no small feat for a small mountain town like Bailey. And now in 2025, the adventure is expanding again—Jim and Daphne are launching a Sasquatch-themed escape room upstairs at the Outpost, officially opening on June 7th. With few escape rooms across the foothills, this one is bound to be a great hit!

A Global Journey with a Colorado Twist

Jim Myers was born in Tulsa, Oklahoma, but his childhood took a dramatic turn when his family moved to Kenya as missionaries. From a young age, he was immersed in a world far from the American Midwest. He spent much of his early life in East Africa, attending boarding school in Nairobi, and absorbing the diverse cultures and landscapes that would shape his worldview.
After returning to the United States, Jim pursued a degree in graphic design at Auburn University in Alabama. But the pull of international service remained strong. He eventually returned overseas to work in the nonprofit world, where he spent the next 20 years serving communities in crisis. For 10 years, Jim lived and worked in Senegal, West Africa, followed by another 10 years living in France, where he met his wife Daphne. During that time, he traveled extensively throughout North Africa, the Middle East, and Central Asia, specializing in crisis management and humanitarian work.
In 2012, after two decades abroad, Jim and Daphne moved to Bailey, Colorado, seeking a quieter life in the mountains. What they didn’t expect was that this peaceful town would become the epicenter of their next adventure—one that would take them deep into the woods of Colorado folklore and straight into the world of Sasquatch.
Jim’s fascination with Sasquatch didn’t begin until he moved to Bailey. One day, a friend shared a story of mysterious howls captured nearby, and it piqued Jim’s curiosity. As he dug deeper, he was surprised to discover a large community of researchers and enthusiasts who believed Bigfoot was real—and even more shocked to find that Bailey Colorado was a hotspot for sightings. A self-proclaimed skeptic at first, Jim found himself gradually pulled into the mystery. Over time, what started as an interest became a full-blown passion. He began reading, researching, and eventually going out into the field himself. The more stories he heard and the more evidence he gathered, the more convinced he became that something unexplained was out there in the forest. Now, that passion for cryptozoology has turned into a thriving business.

A Museum That Brings the Legend to Life

This isn’t your average roadside attraction. The Sasquatch Encounter Discovery Museum is immersive, educational, and wildly entertaining. It explores the history of Bigfoot sightings, both locally and globally, and presents the evidence in a way that invites curiosity rather than judgment.
From plaster casts of alleged footprints and audio recordings of vocalizations, to maps, videos, and firsthand encounter reports, the museum captures the imagination of believers and skeptics alike. Guests are encouraged to explore at their own pace—and even leave behind their own Sasquatch stories.
The museum has grown into one of the top Bigfoot museums in the country, regularly ranking in travel guides and paranormal podcasts, and even attracting film crews, authors, and researchers. The guestbook includes names from all 50 states and several countries.
Jim often gives interviews, hosts events, and speaks at conferences about the phenomenon of Sasquatch, always balancing humor with genuine inquiry. For him, it’s not about convincing anyone—it’s about offering an experience that’s informative, surprising, and a whole lot of fun.

In 2025, the Myerses are once again taking the Sasquatch Outpost experience to new heights—literally. They’re currently building a Bigfoot-themed escape room upstairs in their building, designed to give families, tourists, and locals a thrilling, interactive adventure. This won’t be your typical escape room. Guests will enter an immersive environment that plays on the suspense and mystery surrounding Bigfoot lore. A vibrant, eclectic gift shop filled with treasures from Colorado artists and makers, Blossoming Boutique is a place where creativity blooms and community connection thrives.
Catrina’s journey to Bailey feels like destiny. Born and raised in Colorado, she spent her early years living in small towns like Kremmling, Eagle, Edwards, and Gypsum—places where neighbors know your name and life moves at a more meaningful pace. After living in Aurora for a time, she knew she wanted something different for her daughter: the kind of upbringing she cherished. In 2003, she found her forever home in Bailey, and her family has been rooted in the Platte Canyon community ever since.

From Customer to Owner: A Journey of Growth

Catrina’s path to shop ownership wasn’t exactly planned. After an ATV accident made it impossible for her to continue her housecleaning business, she found herself helping at Blossoming Boutique, originally founded by Heather Craig as a plant shop. Over time, the shop expanded to include local artisan goods, and when Heather was ready to move on, Catrina couldn’t imagine letting such a special place close its doors. On January 1, 2023, she officially took over—and Blossoming Boutique entered a new chapter.
During her recovery, one loyal companion was there every step of the way: her dog Jasper. Just a pup when the accident happened, Jasper quickly became more than a pet—he was a source of strength and comfort. These days, he’s Catrina’s trusty sidekick and unofficial shop greeter. Most days, you’ll find Jasper at the boutique, happily welcoming visitors with tail wags and curious sniffs, adding even more warmth to the shop’s friendly atmosphere.

More Than Plants: A Place for Handmade Treasures

Since taking the reins, Catrina has expanded the boutique's offerings even further. In addition to plants, she’s added over 20 Colorado-based vendors, featuring everything from essential oils, jewelry, and candles to baby booties and uniquely crafted gifts. Many of the items aren’t mass-produced; they are artistic expressions, made with heart. One of her favorite things is seeing customers find something that makes them smile—like the playful earrings that have even sparked laughter at dental appointments!

A Shop That Makes You Smile

More than just a shop, Blossoming Boutique is a happy place. Catrina regularly invites her vendors to host pop-ups and classes, making the boutique a community gathering spot as well. She's proud to now be a member of the Platte Canyon Chamber of Commerce and actively participates in events supporting Bailey’s vibrant local scene.

Challenges, Changes, and Community Connections

Running a small business isn’t without its challenges. Location visibility and the name "Blossoming Boutique" sometimes create confusion—many still assume it’s only a flower or plant shop. But once people step inside, they quickly discover it's a treasure trove of one-of-a-kind gifts. Social media is another hurdle, but Catrina works hard to keep her Facebook and Instagram pages updated, while word of mouth and community partnerships also help spread the word.
When asked about her biggest motivator, Catrina is clear: she loves supporting her artists and sharing the joy their work brings. Her proudest achievement so far? Keeping the doors open and staying true to the heart of what makes the boutique special—despite a tough economy and the daily ups and downs of small business life.
Her personal motto fits the journey perfectly: “Just keep breathing.”
In her words, "There will always be struggles, but if you can breathe through them, you’ll get through."

A Bailey native, Bryan is a graduate of Platte Canyon High School and Monfort College of Business at the University of Northern Colorado. His story with his wife, Beth (Crawford), is one of full-circle moments—they grew up together, played high school sports in the same circles, and even had a college date that didn’t go anywhere. Life took them in different directions, but they reconnected in 2008 and married in 2009. Bryan ran his family’s business, Hutchison Lumber (now Moore Lumber), while Beth built a career in education and now leads the history department at Valor Christian.

Before joining Crow Hill, Bryan spent over a decade with Habitat for Humanity, focusing on fundraising, home-building initiatives, and working with county officials to address community needs. Now, as Crow Hill's third owner, he is committed to upholding its strong reputation while introducing modern enhancements in IT and client communication.

Ensuring No One Ages Alone

Aging should never mean aging alone. For many seniors in the Platte Canyon area, finding resources, staying connected, and navigating the challenges of aging can feel overwhelming. That’s where the Seniors Alliance of Platte Canyon (SAPC) steps in—offering support, advocacy, and a sense of belonging to older adults in our community.
Founded in 2019, SAPC was created to fill a crucial gap in services for seniors on the east side of Kenosha Pass. While the Park County Senior Coalition theoretically serves the entire county, many seniors in the Bailey area lacked local support. Recognizing this need, a dedicated group of individuals came together with a vision to ensure that every senior in the Platte Canyon area has a place to access resources and support to promote healthy aging.

Mission & Vision

SAPC is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to enriching the lives of seniors through advocacy, education, socialization, and connection to essential resources. Their mission is clear: to connect seniors with the support they need while fostering a community where aging is embraced, not feared. They firmly believe that all seniors deserve access to a quality of life that sustains their health and well-being.
In the last 3 years alone, 728 people have reached out to SAPC for support, demonstrating the critical role they play in the community.

What They Do

SAPC operates on four key pillars: Advocacy, Socialization, Education, and Resources.

Advocacy : SAPC amplifies the voices of seniors by participating in legislative meetings and local government discussions. They were instrumental in supporting initiatives and proposals such as the formation of the Platte Canyon Health Services District and bringing the Stride Mobile Health Clinic to Bailey, and continue to fight for better access for seniors to healthcare and emergency services.
Socialization : Isolation is a major challenge for many seniors, and SAPC actively works to combat loneliness. They host events like an annual Ice Cream Social in July, where seniors and their families can gather for fun and friendship. Their Card Making, Carols & Cookies event, which recently partnered with Fitzsimmons Middle School, created a heartwarming intergenerational holiday gathering. They are launching knitting classes and more.
Education : Knowledge is power, and SAPC empowers seniors with the information they need to thrive. Their emergency preparedness program through (FAB - Fire Adapted Bailey) helps seniors develop evacuation plans, while their technology education initiatives teach older adults how to record doctor visits on their phones and access free online classes through CSU Extension.
Resources : SAPC is a vital connector, guiding seniors to essential services for food, heating assistance, and home maintenance. Through partnerships with organizations like the Department of Human Services, Park County Senior Coalition, LifeBridge, Mountain Resource Center, Mt Evans Home and Healthcare and more, they ensure no senior is left behind. One of their most impactful programs provides electric blankets and space heaters to seniors struggling to stay warm during the harsh Colorado winters.

The Nurse Lending Closet: A Lifeline for Many

SAPC also runs the Nurse Lending Closet, a program that provides free medical equipment such as walkers, canes, raised toilets, wheelchairs, scooters, ice machines and more. This service at times even extends beyond seniors—it has aided high school athletes recovering from injuries, individuals across the region, and even those as far as Evergreen and Pueblo who heard about the program.
Since 2022, SAPC has lent out 172 medical equipment items to 111 people in need.

Community Outreach and Events

SAPC hosts social and educational events to help seniors stay engaged and informed. They also collaborate with organizations like Public Health, the Department of Human Services, and the Park County Senior Coalition to ensure community members have access to the resources they need.

Office & Volunteer Support

Establishing a physical office space has been a major milestone for the Alliance, giving the community a dedicated place to seek information and assistance. The organization is entirely volunteer-run, with more than 2,000 recorded volunteer hours in the past year—though the true number is likely much higher.

Expanding Their Reach

SAPC is currently working on an updated Senior Resource Directory, which will be available online in March. This guide will offer comprehensive information on available services, helping seniors navigate challenges more efficiently.

Challenges & How You Can Help

Like many grassroots organizations, funding remains one of SAPC’s biggest challenges. As a fully volunteer-run nonprofit, they rely on community support, grants, and donations to keep their programs running. Their primary fundraiser, the Gold Rush Fever event, is held on the third Saturday of September and features a barbecue dinner, live music, dance, and a silent auction. In 2023, SAPC played a key role in helping to launch a nonprofit collaboration initiative, bringing local nonprofit organizations together to share resources, improve grant-writing success, and secure better insurance rates for board members. Heathcare Services are Coming to Bailey

Grand Opening Tuesday February 25!

This initiative is the result of a collaborative effort between the Stride Healthcare, Platte Canyon Area Chamber of Commerce, the Seniors Alliance of Platte Canyon, and the Park County Library System.
Together, these organizations have taken an important first step toward bringing much-needed medical services to Bailey and the surrounding areas. The launch of a mobile medical service marks the beginning of what we hope will grow into a permanent healthcare solution for our community.
The mobile medical unit will provide essential healthcare services, including routine check-ups, health screenings and more -- making care more accessible and convenient for local residents.
Weekly medical services will begin on Tuesday, February 25, 2025. The unit will be stationed at the Bailey Public Library every Tuesday from 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM, offering reliable healthcare options close to home.

Key Meeting Updates

Visitor Center Initiative

The idea of establishing a Visitor Center in Bailey is in the exploratory phase. The Chamber board is actively collaborating with Park County Government to identify a suitable location that meets the community’s needs. Stay tuned for further updates on this exciting project.

Mobile Health Care at the Bailey Library

Stride Health Care is bringing mobile health services to our community with a trial visit scheduled for February 15th at the Bailey Library. While specific hours are still being determined, this initiative features a state-of-the-art vehicle equipped with two exam rooms, telehealth capabilities, and the ability to dispense medications (such as antibiotics). Services will be available for patients on Medicare, Medicaid, with various insurance plans, as well as for those without insurance.

Upcoming Town Hall Meeting

Plans are underway for a Town Hall Meeting, with the Chamber acting as the facilitator. The venue is currently being finalized, and we will share additional details soon. This meeting will serve as an open forum to discuss community priorities and local issues.

Home-Based Business & Prospective Member Meeting

A monthly meeting for home-based business owners and prospective members will be held on the third Wednesday of each month . The first session is scheduled for February 19th at 6:00 PM in the Bailey Library Community Room—a perfect opportunity to network and learn more about how the Chamber can support your business. Platte Canyon Schools Update

Mike Schmidt, Superintendent of Platte Canyon Schools, provided an update on the ongoing consolidation of the middle school into the main campus for next year. Although the project is progressing on schedule, Mike noted a shortfall in state funding and urged community members to contact local representatives to support our schools. Tech troubles? Meet Tamra Hartman, founder and lead tech of All Support All Computers—providing world-class computer tech support to businesses and individuals for over two decades.
From the moment our interview started, it was clear that Tamra Hartman is not your typical information technology (IT) professional. Her level of thought and organization was immediately impressive—she had already written out answers to the sample questions I sent in meticulous detail, a first among the many interviews I’ve conducted. But what really stood out was her unique blend of technical expertise, business acumen, and a deep commitment to fairness and customer empowerment.

From Hard Work to High-Tech: A Self-Made Tech Expert with Midwestern Grit

Tamra grew up in Lakewood, Colorado, but her family’s roots trace back to western Kansas, where her parents grew up. They married, and left for new beginnings in Colorado. That midwestern work ethic runs deep—she works hard, often going the extra mile for her clients. Just the night before our conversation, she had been out until 2a.m. helping a new client that is a tax preparer in a panic. "Most of my clients don’t have emergencies like that," she explained. "I build their systems so they don’t. But new clients? That’s where the fires are." And it’s clear that when fires do arise, she’s the person you want on the scene—calm, collected, and three steps ahead.
Her journey into technology support wasn’t a conventional one. Starting at Northwestern Mutual as a receptionist fresh out of high school, she worked her way up in marketing, sales, recruiting and mentoring new agents, to Director of Operations by the age of 25, only to hit a glass ceiling that required relocating to back east for further advancement. But her family was here, so she pivoted. She realized she had been handling technology and computer-related tasks all along—without formal training—so she decided to make it her career. "I applied for two jobs, one that was IT and the other in order processing. I told them, ‘I’ll do two jobs for the price of one if you let me have the IT side.’" It worked. She taught herself in an era before Google, relying on thick manuals and sheer determination. "That’s the midwestern work ethic," she said with a smile.

When she pursued technical certifications, she didn’t take the easy route. "I asked what the hardest test was. They said Cisco. So that’s the one I took." Many people fail multiple times, but she passed on the first try. That’s the kind of person she is—driven, methodical, and always up for a challenge. She later became Microsoft certified, and even went back to school at Red Rocks, only to discover she could have taught most of the classes herself.

A People-First Approach: Fair, Transparent, and Empowering Tech Support

Tamra is grateful for her early background in sales and marketing—skills that set her apart in the tech world. "Many techs are introverts, preferring to work by themselves. I am the opposite, I am an extrovert, I like to be out amongst people.” Her approach is refreshingly different—she doesn’t create dependence on her services. "I make sure my clients are self-sufficient. I don’t milk them for every dime. I educate them enough so they can manage their systems without constant hand-holding."
Her commitment to fairness extends to her pricing. She charges by the quarter-hour—an uncommon practice in the IT world, where full-hour billing is the norm. "I don’t believe in gouging people. If you need me for 15 minutes, that’s what you pay for." And despite traveling to clients in Evergreen, Lakewood, Littleton and beyond, she typically doesn’t charge trip fees—unless it’s an emergency, and even then, she passes the trip fee along as a courtesy to the client she had to reschedule. If she helps her clients with hardware purchases, she passes those costs on at net with no markup.

Finding Home in the High Country: A Wild Welcome to Bailey

In 2021, she sold her Lakewood home and moved to the mountains in Bailey. She had always been drawn to the high country to hike and enjoy nature, frequently escaping westward whenever a client canceled a meeting. The move felt natural. But it came with surprises—like the mountain lion that jumped onto her deck the first night she was there. "We just stared at each other. I jumped inside, he jumped back into the woods. I’ve caught him (or one of his friends) on my cameras a few times since." She respects the land and its inhabitants, including a family of deer she has watched grow over the past three years. "I’ve invaded their space, not the other way around. I try to be a good neighbor."

Small by Design: Building Lasting Relationships

Tamra’s business philosophy is simple: small on purpose. She works from her home that includes three comprehensive tech set ups; and doesn’t take on massive clients because she values quality over quantity. "I have clients who are three-person law firms. Bigger tech firms don’t want them, but they’re perfect for me. I don’t want to manage a bunch of people—I don’t want to be an ‘IT mom.’" That discipline has served her well. She has a roster of loyal clients who rarely have tech-related emergencies because she builds systems designed to prevent them.
When asked what she’s most proud of, she doesn’t cite awards or certifications. "Sustaining. I’ve been in business for 22 years. I’ve built something that lasts." Her biggest challenge? "Getting a life," she laughs. But in truth, her clients often become friends. "It doesn’t feel like work when you love what you do and the people you do it for."
Tamra is living proof that IT doesn’t have to be cold, impersonal, or inaccessible. It can be fair, empowering, and—even in a world of firewalls and servers—deeply human.

The Chances Scholarship program has grown tremendously since its humble beginnings in 2013 as a Platte Canyon Chamber of Commerce committee dedicated to helping local students access educational opportunities. In January 2018, Chances was officially registered as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, and since then, it has continued to expand its impact, providing crucial financial support to Platte Canyon High School seniors pursuing their dreams.

A Growing Legacy of Support

Since 2018, Chances has awarded $84,150 in scholarships to 60 students , helping them pursue further education in trade schools, professional development training, and other college programs. Here’s a look at how the program has grown over the years:

Bridging Bailey: How HiBai and LoBai Bring Clarity and Unity to Our Community

Bailey is a community rich in history and natural beauty, but for years, identifying different parts of town has been a challenge. Visitors and even some residents have struggled to connect the Bailey's downtown area and the residential and commercial zones near County Road 43. The 43 area has been known by many names—Crow Hill, Delwood, 43A, and even Deer Creek on some deed agreements—leading to confusion for visitors.

A Town Divided by Nature

Bailey is not your typical small town—our community is spread over a large area, separated by a mountain, a highway, and vast stretches of land. This natural dispersion has made it even more challenging to create a unified sense of place and identity. With businesses and homes scattered across different elevations and terrains, it's easy for both residents and visitors to feel disconnected or unsure of where things are located.

Listening to the Community

About a year ago, the Platte Canyon Area Chamber of Commerce conducted research to better understand community needs. Through community input and historical references, we found that some locals have referred to these two areas by their nicknames: HiBai and LoBai. Rather than creating something new, the Chamber chose to embrace these familiar terms to provide clarity and consistency for everyone.

What Do HiBai and LoBai Mean?

HiBai refers to the higher-elevation area near County Road 43.

LoBai designates the lower-elevation downtown area.

These terms are practical tools to help new residents and visitors easily identify different parts of Bailey, improving navigation and communication for local businesses and organizations.

Rebuilding Bailey: US 285 Safety and Mobility Grant

Exciting news for Bailey, Colorado! Park County has been awarded a $1.2 million grant through the Reconnecting Communities Pilot (RCP) Grant Program for the transformative "Rebuilding Bailey" project. This significant funding will support the development of a comprehensive Rehabilitation and Connectivity Master Plan aimed at revitalizing downtown Bailey.

The Rebuilding Bailey project focuses on enhancing safety and connectivity along Main Street and the surrounding areas. Key objectives include improving public safety and resiliency during emergencies and road closures, creating safe pedestrian pathways, developing inviting community spaces, and updating public infrastructure. All these efforts will be thoughtfully integrated with the town's historical charm, ensuring that Bailey's rich heritage remains a central part of its future growth.

Park County Grant for Bailey Access Improvement s
Park County has been awarded a $1.2 million grant to fund an engineering study focused on improving public access and safety in Bailey. The study will explore solutions such as sidewalks and a pedestrian overpass. This project is expected to enhance safety and mobility in the area.

Chamber Goals for 2025

Visitor Center in Bailey
The Chamber is exploring a commitment from the Board of County Commissioners (BOCC) to provide space at the Community Center (85 Main Street) for a Visitor Center. The preferred location is the Annex building near the driveway entrance.
Platte Canyon Foundation
The Chamber is forming a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, the Platte Canyon Foundation, to manage scholarships and apply for grants to support the Bailey area. Volunteers are needed for the foundation’s board. If interested, reach out to the Chamber.
Town Hall Meeting
A Town Hall Meeting is planned for late February/early March, facilitated by the Chamber.

As of 12/28 the BOIR Filing Requirements Suspended Again Amid Legal Uncertainty; Oral Arguments Scheduled for March 25

It’s been on, then off and then on again and it’s now off again. If you haven’t yet filed your BOIR report or are confused by the recent court actions, here’s an important update you need to know.
The Beneficial Ownership Information Reporting (BOIR) requirements, established under the Corporate Transparency Act (CTA), continue to face legal challenges, resulting in ongoing uncertainty for small-business owners. Recent court decisions have vacillated between enforcing and blocking the reporting mandates, leaving businesses in a state of flux.

Recent Legal Developments

December 3, 2024 : The U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Texas issued a nationwide preliminary injunction, halting enforcement of the CTA's BOIR requirements due to constitutional concerns.
December 23, 2024 : A Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals motions panel lifted the nationwide injunction, reinstating the reporting requirements.
December 26, 2024 : A different Fifth Circuit panel vacated the December 23 order, reinstating the nationwide injunction and suspending the BOIR requirements once again. March 25, 2025: Oral arguments are scheduled, where both sides will present their case, and the future of the BOIR requirements may become clearer.

Current Status

As of December 28, 2024, small-business owners are not required to submit a beneficial ownership information report. The Financial Crimes Enforcement Network (FinCEN) has acknowledged the injunction and is encouraging voluntary compliance during this period. If your business is a simple one, it may be prudent to simply file so you don’t have to worry about it.

Next Steps

Oral arguments are scheduled for March 25, 2025, where the constitutionality of the CTA's reporting requirements will be further examined. The outcome of these proceedings will significantly impact the future enforcement of BOIR mandates. Implications for Small Businesses
The legal back-and-forth has created confusion among small-business owners regarding compliance obligations. Initially, businesses formed before January 1, 2024, were required to file by January 1, 2025, with new entities given a 90-day window from formation to file. With the current injunction, these deadlines were first extended and are now at least temporarily suspended.

he 2024 GRACIE Award recipient, Robin Davis, exemplifies a lifetime of resilience, community dedication, and unwavering service. From her childhood as a military "brat" to becoming a cornerstone of Bailey, Colorado's civic and philanthropic efforts, Robin’s story is a testament to her commitment to making a difference.

A Life of Adaptability and Strength

Robin’s early life set the stage for her resilient character. Born in San Francisco and raised in a variety of places, including Camp Pendleton and Virginia, Robin learned early on to navigate diverse cultures. Her family settled in a small Virginia town after her father retired from the Marines, where Robin experienced the stark contrasts of Southern culture and military-base inclusivity.
“I quickly learned that other people’s opinions of me weren’t as important as my own self-worth,” she reflects on her formative years. Robin’s journey brought her to Colorado after stints in Washington, D.C., Philadelphia, and several cities across the state working with the phone company and data centers. She fell in love with Colorado’s majestic mountains and moved to the Denver area initially, then settled in Bailey in 2011, where she and her family remodeled their unique home to make it their own.

Community Engagement

Robin’s introduction to community service began through her husband Pat, who was actively involved with the Platte Canyon Area Chamber and other local initiatives. Before long, Robin found herself deeply entrenched in the community, supporting events like Bailey Days and serving on the Deer Creek Valley Ranchos HOA board.
Her most impactful work has been through Fire Adapted Bailey (FAB) . Robin championed fire mitigation efforts, ensuring safer evacuation routes and securing funding for critical projects. Through her leadership, FAB raised $52,000 for the Platte Canyon Fire Department, bolstered by Robin’s hands-on efforts, such as becoming a state-certified flagger to assist with fire mitigation along key routes.
Robin also collaborates with Fire Adapted Colorado (FACO) and promotes home-hardening education to safeguard properties against wildfires. “Understanding how fires move and how to protect your home can make all the difference,” she emphasizes.

Joy International and Advocacy

Robin’s passion for service extends globally through her work with Joy International , a nonprofit dedicated to combatting human trafficking. Inspired by founder Jeff Brodsky, a longtime friend and former youth pastor, Robin has supported the organization through fundraising and awareness campaigns.
Notably, Robin participated in a 101-mile walk in Death Valley to raise funds for adopting orphaned children in China during the country’s one-child policy era. She has also been involved in efforts to rescue and rehabilitate children from human trafficking, a cause she calls “life-changing” and close to her heart.

A Legacy of Leadership

Retired from the phone company a few years ago, Robin continues to devote her time to advancing safety, education, and compassion within the Bailey community. Her tireless efforts and determination have not only left a lasting impact but have inspired others to contribute.
Receiving the 2024 GRACIE Award is a well-deserved recognition of Robin’s extraordinary contributions. “This community has given me so much, and I’m honored to give back,” she shares humbly.

Heather, a local who grew up in the area and graduated from the school district, returned to Bailey in 2020 to help manage the family business and start her own accounting firm, Satchel & Rose Bookkeeping. Her deep ties to the community and dedication to customer service shine through in every aspect of the operation.

From Real Estate Vision to a State-of-the-Art Storage Facility

Mark’s journey into self-storage began after a period of illness in 2013-2014. Concerned about his family’s future, he leaned into his deep background as a commercial real estate appraiser and decided to build businesses based on his expertise in real estate. Initially focusing on ventures like a coffee shop and a liquor store, Mark eventually shifted his attention to self-storage after hearing from his contractor about the demand for such a facility in the area. However, his vision was far from ordinary—he aimed to build a top-tier, climate-controlled storage space, a step above the typical offerings in the industry.

Heather also brings firsthand knowledge of what makes a storage facility stand out. She recalls past experiences in dirty and poorly-maintained units and was determined to offer something different. The facility is always plowed and well-lit during the winter months, offering drive-up access, climate-controlled units, and top-notch security. The road to building the facility wasn’t easy. Mark and Heather faced numerous challenges, from constantly changing county regulations to delays caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. They had to navigate everything from unexpected plumbing requirements to the installation of a retention pond, and even had to bring in priests to perform a surprising but memorable "exorcism" to appease superstitious construction workers concerned about spirits on the property. Despite these hurdles, their determination to finish what they started never wavered, even when the project ran hundreds of thousands of dollars over budget.

Beyond the storage business, Mark and Heather have embraced their role as community members and business owners. Terry’s love for plants is rooted in her family’s history, quite literally. Growing up in a family steeped in the green industry, Terry has been surrounded by farming and gardening since birth. “My family, for generations, has been involved in farming, from vegetables to seeds,” she recalls. Her ancestors in Iowa even grew seeds for Ferry-Morse, a name synonymous with quality seeds.
Though her family has roots in Iowa, Terry and her family have long been a part of Colorado. Originally from Fort Collins, Terry eventually found her way to Bailey, where she continues her family’s tradition of growing, only now as the proud owner of Fancy Forest. “We have Colorado roots. We’re pioneers here on one side of the family,” she adds proudly.

The Birth of Fancy Forest

After spending years in the green industry and having her own independent ventures, Terry made the leap to open Fancy Forest just eight months ago. However, her experience in retail and plant sales spans much longer. Prior to opening her current shop, Terry spent four years selling her plants at King’s Emporium, where she developed a loyal customer base. “I started there four years ago. I saw a flower cart there, and I knew I wanted to use it for shows and farmers’ markets,” Terry explains. This simple flower cart marked the beginning of her foray into retail, which eventually led to the creation of Fancy Forest.
Terry reflects on her decision to establish her shop in Bailey: “I wanted my Bailey people to know what I did.” Having lived in Bailey for many years, Terry was drawn to the idea of bringing her business closer to home, where she could share her passion for plants with the local community.

While Fancy Forest has been well-received in the community, Terry admits that the journey has not been without its challenges. One of the primary hurdles has been visibility. “It’s been hard for people to figure out that there is an inside shop as well as the outdoor display,” Terry notes. With the pandemic causing significant disruptions, Chris and Kacie made the decision to relocate the business to Shawnee in 2020.
The move to an historic building next to the post office in Shawnee, overlooking a gorgeous pine covered ridge and river proved to be a great decision. "We have this stunning scenic view now and curiosity (or maybe the need for a bathroom break) tends to lure people off the highway” Chris notes. Plus, the overhead costs dropped significantly when we moved from the city, making it easier to net money, despite not making as much in total revenue as before. Kacie’s contribution to the business has been invaluable. She expanded their offerings to include a wide range of art supplies, such as brushes, acrylics, oils, posters, toys for kids, puzzles, metal signs, yarn, and needles and much more. This diversification helped supplement the expenses that came with the price increase of framing services.

Artistic Backgrounds and Expertise

Both Chris and Kacie come from strong artistic backgrounds. Kacie holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Painting and Printmaking from Virginia Commonwealth University, while Chris studied Media Arts and Animation at the Art Institute in Washington, D.C. Their expertise in art has been a significant asset to their business. "When you're an artist, framing is kind of a job that you get," Kacie explains. Their skills in printmaking and animation, combined with years of experience working at frame shops, have enabled them to offer unique services and insights to their customers.
One of their standout services is their ability to identify and authenticate prints. "We can tell whether they're original prints or just printed out on some other type of printer," Kacie says. This expertise has earned them a loyal customer base, with many clients returning for their specialized knowledge and personalized service.

Adapting to Challenges and Embracing Community

The move to Shawnee brought about a fresh start and new opportunities. "We fell in love with the Shawnee area. We were initially looking at houses in Conifer, Bailey, and Pine, and there was really nothing at the time that worked for us," Kacie shares. Their realtor suggested Shawnee, and it turned out to be a perfect fit. "It's a very special place. It's beautiful," she adds. The pandemic forced many businesses to adapt, and Time Capsule Framing was no exception. They started offering online services, such as digital mock-ups of framing projects. Customers could send pictures of their art, and Chris and Kacie would provide virtual examples of different framing options. This innovation allowed them to continue serving their clients, even during lockdowns.

Unique Services and Sustainability Efforts

Time Capsule Framing is more than just a framing shop; it's a hub for art lovers and a place where history is preserved. Chris and Kacie are passionate about sustainability and have implemented several eco-friendly practices. They recycle paper, using every scrap of material, and even make their own paper. "We try to be as green as possible because of the industry we're in and use everything," Kacie explains. Their services extend beyond standard framing. They offer large-format digital printing, graphic design, and photo editing. They also handle specialty projects, such as preserving historic papers and creating shadow boxes for unique items like turkey tails. Ask Chris sometime about that unique smell - he says it still haunts him. Their ability to copy and reprint old photographs has made them a valuable resource for the local community, particularly those interested in preserving Shawnee's rich history.

Community Engagement and Future Plans

Chris and Kacie's commitment to their community goes beyond their business operations. A natural evolution of their passion for archival work, occupying an historic building, and living in an area with such rich history they became actively engaged in the Shawnee historical society. Under Kacie Eller’s leadership, the historical society initiated a project to restore the Price/Tyler cemetery in Shawnee, which has been in use by the Price and Tyler families since 1889, predating the founding of the town. They also offer free digitization and restoration services for old photographs brought in by locals. "We really like to help the locals. It's good being in the historical district," Chris notes. Their location in a historic building adds to their charm and connection to the area's heritage.
Despite the challenges they’ve faced, Chris and Kacie remain motivated by their love for what they do and their desire to contribute to their community. "We love the community here. So we're so happy now to be like a part of the community here in Park County," Kacie says. They continue to adapt and grow, always looking for ways to improve and expand their offerings.

A Homestead Dream

When they’re not working on their business, Chris and Kacie dedicate their time to their homestead. They have two acres of land where they grow vegetables, flowers, and maintain a greenhouse. "We try to give the kids as close to a childhood as we had growing up, like in the 80s and 90s," Kacie shares. Their homestead is a labor of love, and they enjoy spending time outdoors, working on various projects, and caring for their goats and chickens.

Located just up the road, in a new space in the heart of Marshdale, Suz Cookie Jar Rescue Bakery & Bites stands as a vibrant example of perseverance, community camaraderie, and the pursuit of dreams. The bakery, a beloved local establishment, has become a hub for delicious homemade treats and a symbol of perseverance through adversity. The journey of Sue van Welzen-Mueller and her daughter Jacquie Cook, both Bailey residents and active Chamber members, and their bakery is one of remarkable transformation, rooted in the simple yet profound desire to bring joy and comfort through baking.

A Journey of Resilience and Reinvention

Sue's story begins in 2002, a challenging year when she and her husband lost their cellular construction business. With their son Joh only a year old, Sue faced a pivotal decision: how to balance work and family life without resorting to daycare. She turned to baking, a skill she had honed over the years, and began crafting homemade goodies from her kitchen.
"I started baking early in the morning and made baskets of cinnamon rolls, muffins, cookies, and mini breads," Sue recalls. "I delivered them to local offices in Bailey that had no breakfast options. Everything was warm and fresh when they got it." For about a year and a half, Sue juggled multiple jobs, including daycare, while delivering her baked goods. However, the demands became overwhelming, leading her to step back from baking. Yet, the seed was planted, and the community's appreciation for her treats lingered.

Revival and Growth

Years later, after moving to California and returning to Bailey, Sue decided to give her baking venture another shot. Encouraged by friends and family, she obtained a cottage kitchen license in 2018. The idea of a "cookie jar rescue" emerged when she posted on Facebook, asking if anyone would buy a vintage cookie jar filled with homemade cookies. The response was overwhelming, and Suz Cookie Jar Rescue was born.
"People loved the idea," Sue explains. "I started doing summer markets at King’s Emporium, using Ziploc bags and index cards for ingredients. It was humble beginnings, but it was a start. We would go out routinely and look for unique cookies jars everywhere - from estate sales, to antique stores, thrift shops and garage sales. Once people knew what we were doing, they would help us find them.”
The onset of COVID-19 in 2020 turned into an unexpected boon for the business. With more time at home, Sue expanded her menu, offering breads, cinnamon rolls, and other time-consuming delights. The business grew, and Sue's 900-square-foot house transformed into a bustling bakery.
"My house was packed with ovens and shelves and my husband called it a bakery with bedrooms” Sue says with a laugh. "It was crazy, but we managed to grow during the pandemic."

Overcoming Adversity

The turning point for Sue's business came on February 28, 2022. While working part-time at the Mountain Resource Center unloading a crate of cabbage, she suffered a traumatic brain injury when the heavy loading cart flipped and the steel handle hit her in the head. The incident left her unable to walk for several days, reliant on a cane for six months, and struggling with memory issues.
"I couldn't drive or talk properly," Sue remembers. "It was a tough time, but my daughter Jacquie stepped in to help."
Up to then, Jacquie had a full-time demanding job elsewhere, but helped out as needed at the bakery. After Sue’s injury, Jacquie's involvement became crucial. She helped manage the bakery and take on more baking duties while Sue recovered, ensuring the business stayed afloat. As Sue was recovering, the duo faced a few challenges, including a somewhat unfortunate kite festival in Arvada in April, where their carefully crafted kite-shaped chocolate treats melted into a “chocolate mud puddles” under the intense Colorado sun. They laugh about it now, but at the time, not so much. Despite the numerous setbacks, they persevered.

The Birth of the Brick and Mortar

Sue's decision to establish a brick-and-mortar bakery materialized after a windstorm sent her expensive, custom-made pink tent aloft and rolling down the hill during a holiday bake sale in December 2021. Tired of the "tent life," Sue signed a lease for a physical location at Delwood Square in Bailey on December 31, 2021. The journey to open the bakery was fraught with delays, including slow-moving contractors and then Sue's injury. However, they pushed through and celebrated their grand opening on May 1, 2022.
"It was an emotional day," Sue says. "We cried a lot, but we pulled it off with the support of our family."
The bakery thrived, growing its wholesale side and attracting numerous customers. Two years later, after their lease was not renewed in Bailey, they moved in April and held their grand reopening at the new space in Marshdale on May 22, 2024. Moving to the new larger space in Marshdale (right next to Marshall Burgers) was a decision that has significantly impacted their business and direction.

A Vision for the Future

The new location offers more retail frontage, a seating area inside and on an outdoor deck - which allows them to focus more on direct retail sales. The new location boosts a larger kitchen, more storage and better visibility and foot traffic. The shift to a retail focus means the bakery now boasts seven employees and a vibrant, community-focused, family-friendly environment. Sue and Jacquie’s vision for the bakery emphasizes supporting local businesses and creating a welcoming space for customers. A sign on the entry door sums up their motto - “Here you’re family”.
Dozens of whimsical cookie jars line the new shelving in the store creating a fun, colorful display and keeping the roots of the business at the forefront. “While we now offer a much wider selection of goods, you can still stop in and pick up a cookie jar and fill it with your favorite treat.” Jacquie emphasized.
“In addition to our homemade goodies, we feature local products like Paula's tea from Polita’s Place, Daddy's Homemade Syrups, and Michelle Nortnik’s (MN Designs) teddy bears and aprons," Jacquie explains. "It's important to us to support the people who helped us get here."
The bakery now offers breakfast and lunch, with all items made from scratch using fresh ingredients. Popular offerings include calzones, sandwiches, pizza bagels, and mac and cheese. Sue and Jacquie take pride in their creations and continuously strive to improve their recipes based on customer feedback.

Celebrating Achievements

One of the bakery's significant achievements came in September 2022, when Sue's green chili cheddar bread won a bronze award at the Tiptree International Bread Competition in Las Vegas. Jacquie, who now works full time in the business, has honed her baking skills over the years, shares the pride in their accomplishments.
"My biggest personal achievement is how far I've come with my own baking skills," Jacquie says. "We've had people tell us that my cakes have improved significantly. We're always open to feedback and eager to make things better."

Mary Ruth’s connection to Glen Isle dates back to her childhood in the 1970s, when her family visited the resort every summer. When she met Greg in 2000, she introduced him to Glen Isle, and despite the resort’s dilapidated state, they both saw its potential.

In 2016, during a visit to Bailey following an Adele concert, Mary Ruth and Greg discovered Glen Isle in shambles, with a real estate sign marking its uncertain future. Determined to it save from further decline, they made what Greg said was a ridiculous offer to purchase the property. Despite numerous obstacles, including the myriad of challenges in even getting it financed in its dilapidated condition and incredibly complex restoration work, they remained committed. By 2018, they began welcoming guests back, starting with one cabin and gradually expanding as renovations progressed.

Historic Preservation

Built in 1901, Glen Isle is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, which presents unique challenges in terms of what can and cannot be altered. The Vincents have worked diligently within these constraints to ensure that the resort retains its historic charm while providing modern comforts. Their efforts include restoring 16 of the 19 cabins and undertaking significant infrastructure improvements, such as installing a comprehensive water treatment system.

A Labor of Love

Restoring Glen Isle has been a true labor of love for Mary Ruth and Greg. They have lived in multiple cabins and even an RV during the renovation process, often doing much of the work themselves. And sacrificing many creature comforts we all take for granted. But, despite the numerous sacrifices and hardships, their passion for preserving Glen Isle's legacy and creating a welcoming retreat for guests has never wavered.

We Came Together and Accomplished So Much!

On May 18th, our Bailey community came together for a day of hard work, dedication, and camaraderie during our Spring Cleanup Event. The results were nothing short of amazing, demonstrating the collective power of our wonderful volunteers and the love we all have for our beautiful town.

A Day of Impact

Volunteers tackled five key areas of Bailey, collecting over 200 bags of litter. Their efforts extended beyond just the main streets; we even had some passionate folks who took on the challenge of cleaning the river and marshland/wetland areas. Their hard work ensured that these vital ecosystems remain clean and thriving.

Public Roll-Off Dumpsters

The three large roll-off dumpsters we provided for free public use were filled in under an hour! This quick response highlighted the community's eagerness to declutter and responsibly dispose of bulky items.

Recycling Success

Our four recycling drop-off sites were incredibly busy, collecting: • Nearly 300 gallons of paint • Over 150 tires • A mountain of electronics and technology • More appliances and scrap metal than we ever expected
This overwhelming response shows our community’s commitment to recycling and proper waste disposal.

Community Beautification

Beyond just cleaning up, we also focused on beautifying our town. Volunteers prepped and painted the apartments by China Village, giving these buildings a fresh, vibrant look that everyone can enjoy.

Recently, Crow Hill Veterinary Hospital made a significant move from County Road 43 to their new location, which they have purchased, at 12 Rosalie Road. The speed at which they moved - closing their old location on March 29th and reopening in their new location on April 1 - was impressive and a great deal of hard work. This move isn't just a change of address—it was a strategic decision to expand their services and provide even better care to their furry, scaly, and feathered patients.

Chad, a Bailey native, shared his excitement about the future and emphasized how much this community means to both of them. And now, the move will allow Crow Hill more flexibility to offer simple things like fenced areas for the animals to even more extended services to patients. They already are able to do most lab work in-house, which speeds the process and perform many surgical procedures here locally given Dr Sheila's background. Once they get fully settled in, the move gives them more land and the freedom to be able to envision and do even more.

Beyond Veterinary Care: Community Engagement

Dr. Sheila and Chad are not just passionate about veterinary medicine; they are also active members of the Bailey community. Dr. Sheila was a former Chamber board member, is involved with 4-H and helps with the high-altitude livestock show in Fairplay. They have also supported many local events and organizations, including Bailey Days and community fairs, showcasing their commitment to giving back.

As part of our ongoing efforts to guide strategic planning and enhance the quality of life in Bailey, we conducted a comprehensive research study in November 2023. Launching on October 13th, 2023, our online survey aimed to capture the sentiments, thoughts, and suggestions of our residents. We were overwhelmed by the response: 357 completed surveys were submitted. And we had an impressive 100% completion rate with on average over 10 minutes spent by those who completed the survey. This level of engagement speaks volumes about our community's passion and commitment to Bailey.

What Does Bailey Mean to You?

When asked about the first thing that comes to mind when thinking of Bailey, "small town," "beautiful mountain scenery," and intriguingly, "Sasquatch" were among the top associations. The prevailing sentiment was that of a quaint, mountainous community with a unique charm.

Strengths and Opportunities

Our survey participants identified Bailey's primary strengths as its small-town feel, picturesque location, and friendly community spirit. However, challenges lie in infrastructure, healthcare access, and public safety, highlighting areas where focused efforts could make a significant difference.

Building Community Connections

While 48% of respondents felt Bailey has a good or great sense of community, we recognize the need to strengthen bonds further. A sense of community is the bedrock of a thriving town, and we're committed to fostering connections and building a stronger, more cohesive Bailey.

The Future of Bailey

The feedback also shed light on our residents' aspirations for Bailey's future. Key themes that emerged included beautification, improved communication, better recreational facilities for families, and increased support for local businesses.

Chamber's Role and Responsiveness

While 27% rated the Chamber's effectiveness positively, we acknowledge that there's work to be done. With 33% of respondents unaware of the chamber's existence, we aim to enhance our visibility and clearly communicate our role as the town's advocate and resource hub.

Armed with these invaluable insights, the Platte Canyon Chamber has taken proactive steps to address the community's concerns. We've presented our findings to the Park County Board of Commissioners and held a public town meeting to discuss actionable strategies.

In comparison, 37% rated their neighborhood as having a good or great sense of community.

Retirement and Family Environment:

44% rated Bailey as a good or great place to retire, with concerns mainly around limited healthcare access.
47% rated Bailey as a good or great place to raise children, citing concerns about lack of playgrounds and school system quality.

Aesthetics and Public Art:

Only 16% felt Bailey had good or great street landscaping and hardscapes in commercial areas.
Merely 11% believed Bailey had a visible presence of public art.

Chamber Effectiveness:

27% rated the chamber's effectiveness as good or great.
33% were unaware of the chamber's existence.
Expectations from the chamber included economic development, beautification, and improved communication.

Conclusion:

The research study highlighted key areas of concern and opportunities for improvement in Bailey. Priorities include beautification, infrastructure development, healthcare access, and improved communication from the chamber. These insights are instrumental in guiding future initiatives and community engagement efforts.

Next Steps:

Following the survey's findings, the chamber has presented the results to the Park County Board of Commissioners and held a public town meeting in February to discuss plans moving forward. Immediate actions include beautification efforts and advocating for healthcare initiatives on the ballot.

We've had reports of a couple scams circulating right now that we all need to watch for.

This one is relative to the SQUARE POS System

Recently there have been reports of a phishing emails and scams where you get an email notice from Square saying your payments processing has been disconnected from your bank account, and to click to reconnect. Don't click! These notices and emails often look official and some even spoof the SquareUp domain. See examples below.
But beware, and call Square before clicking. If you get anything even remotely suspect, be sure to call Square first.

Here are some other recommendations to protect your system:

Be cautious of any unsolicited communications: If you receive unexpected emails, phone calls, or text messages claiming to be from Square or any other payment processor, be wary. Scammers often impersonate legitimate companies to trick individuals into providing sensitive information or making fraudulent payments.
Verify requests for information: Legitimate companies like Square will not typically ask you to provide sensitive information, such as passwords or financial details, via email or text message. If you're unsure about a request, contact Square directly through their official website or customer service hotline to verify its authenticity.
Keep your software updated: Ensure that your Square POS system, as well as any associated software or applications, are kept up-to-date with the latest security patches and updates. Regularly check for software updates and install them promptly to mitigate potential vulnerabilities. Use strong passwords: Protect your Square account with a strong, unique password that includes a combination of letters, numbers, and special characters. Avoid using easily guessable passwords or reusing passwords across multiple accounts. Educate yourself and your staff: Train yourself and your employees to recognize common signs of scams, such as phishing emails, fake websites, and suspicious requests for payment. Encourage a culture of skepticism and caution when dealing with unfamiliar communications or situations.

This one is relative to Facebook/META

This scam has been happening for a while now, and is escalating rapidly. They send you a message via messenger or via email, telling you that you've have a violation and your page is set to be disabled. Don't click on any of them. Clicking can result in you losing your Facebook page to them or all content being deleted.
You can easily check to see if your page has any violations. Simply go to your Facebook page, click your profile icon in the upper right hand corner. A menu will appear, select "Help & Support", then "Support Inbox", then "Your alerts". Any problems with your page will show up there.

Located in the picturesque foothills alongside the South Platte River in Bailey, Aspen Peak Cellars stands as a testament to resilience, passion, and the pursuit of excellence. Founded by Marcel and Julie Flukiger, Aspen Peak Cellars has weathered numerous challenges to become a beacon of quality dining and winemaking in the region. Their award-winning, handcrafted wines, produced right here in Bailey, draw wine enthusiasts from all across the Country.

The story of Aspen Peak Cellars begins with Marcel and Julie, both trained chefs, who crossed paths nearly thirty years ago at Denver's historic Brown Palace. After falling in love, marrying and settling in the foothills, their journey into winemaking began unexpectedly when Marcel gifted Julie a winemaking kit for Christmas in 2005. What started as a hobby soon turned into a passion, with the couple winning several awards for their wines.

In 2009, Marcel and Julie took a leap of faith and opened Aspen Peak Cellars at the Clifton House, a micro-winery, bistro, and bed and breakfast near Conifer. However, tragedy struck in the summer of 2011 when the 135-year-old barn at the Clifton House, housing their winery, was destroyed by a lightning strike. Undeterred, Marcel and Julie relocated their business to a new, larger facility in Bailey in 2012.

Their journey took yet another challenging turn in 2016 when a semi-trailer slammed into their winery, rendering it a "total loss." Despite the setbacks, Marcel and Julie remained steadfast in their determination to pursue their passion for great food and great wine. During the rebuild, they opened a small tasting room next to Sasquatch Outpost until they were able to reopen in January of 2018, operating as a full-service winery/bistro since then. And knock wood, there will be no more run ins with Mother Nature or 18 wheelers in their future.

In my interview with Marcel and Julie, they shared insights into their journey, challenges, and vision for the future. Marcel emphasized the importance of their background in the restaurant business, coupled with their self-taught expertise in winemaking. From starting as a small operation to methodically expanding into a team-driven enterprise, Marcel and Julie credit their success to persistence, a focus on consistency, and a passion for what they do.

Their advice for aspiring business owners emphasizes the need for a solid business plan, resilience in the face of adversity, a commitment to consistency and a deep-rooted passion for their craft.

Producing approximately 2.500 cases of wine annually from grapes sourced from Palisade, Colorado as well as California and Washington, Aspen Peak Cellars has carved a niche for itself in Colorado's winemaking landscape.

Despite the hardships they've faced, Marcel and Julie take pride in the steady growth of their business and the employment opportunities it provides to the local community. With a much appreciated, dedicated team of 18 employees, Aspen Peak Cellars continues to thrive, thanks to the unwavering support of loyal customers and tourists alike.

Looking ahead, Marcel and Julie are excited about the future of Aspen Peak Cellars. They recently introduced dinner service, expanding their offerings to provide a unique dining experience amidst the scenic beauty beside the river. Additionally, they are actively involved in community initiatives to promote tourism and enhance the local economy.
